Fox-in-a-Box® buying guide

Which Level of Fox-in-a-Box® Thermal Industrial Label Printer Is Right for You?

Choosing the best software level for your projects, from everyday labeling to complex data work.

Fox-in-a-Box® is Silver Fox’s thermal industrial labeling solution that lets you design and print a huge range of durable labels in house. It works as a compact desktop thermal transfer printer, a high-quality label printer for cables and equipment, and an all-in-one platform for cable, panel and asset IDs.

When you buy a system, you are not choosing between different printers. The hardware, print quality and speed are the same. The real decision is which software level you unlock: Basic, Advanced or Professional.

Every level includes a lifetime software license, a Fox-in-a-Box® thermal transfer label printer, and free, fully online training and support from the Silver Fox expert team — with no ongoing software subscription.

Map how you actually work today - simple day-to-day jobs, spreadsheet heavy projects or full asset management.

  2. Step 2

Choose Basic, Advanced or Professional based on how much data handling, automation and sharing you need.

  3. Step 3

Use your free trial days on higher levels and upgrade when the extra features clearly save time or money.

One printer, three software levels

The Fox-in-a-Box® hardware stays the same. Your choice of Basic, Advanced or Professional unlocks the software features that match your projects.

1. Core platform

One printer, three software levels

However you configure Fox-in-a-Box®, the essentials stay the same. You are getting a compact desktop thermal transfer printer that works as a dependable cable label printer, cable label maker and general label printer for cables and equipment.

Whichever level you choose, you receive:

Same industrial printer hardware

The same Fox-in-a-Box® thermal transfer cable labeling machine, with identical print quality, speed and build across Basic, Advanced and Professional.

Ready to print out of the box

300 m of thermal transfer ribbon, all required cables and leads and everything you need to start printing durable labels on day one.

Lifetime software license

A perpetual license for your chosen Labacus Innovator® level, with free feature updates at that level so your system stays current.

Wide media compatibility

Support for a broad range of Silver Fox® materials - from wrap-around labels and panel tags through to heatshrink sleeves - so the same printer doubles as a heat shrink label printer and heat shrink tube label printer.

The only real difference between bundles is how far you want to go with the software - from straightforward jobs through to complex, data-heavy projects with multiple users.

2. Training & support

What “free training and support” really means

When you buy Fox-in-a-Box®, you are not just buying a printer and some printers labels. You are getting a long-term partnership with the Silver Fox® team, delivered entirely online.

  1. 1

    Free online training

Remote onboarding sessions with a Silver Fox specialist, walk-throughs of Labacus Innovator® screens and label types, practical guidance on choosing materials and step-by-step instruction on importing data from spreadsheets and test systems.

  2. 2

    Free online support

Direct access to the expert support team by email, phone or video call for help with printer setup, drivers, media selection, template tweaks and best practice advice for labeling cables and building consistent ID schemes.

In short, “free training and support” means ongoing, fully online help from people who work with Fox-in-a-Box® every day, so you spend less time fighting labels and more time finishing projects.

3. Basic level

Basic - straightforward power for smaller contractors

Basic is ideal if you want a simple, dependable cable labeler and cable labeller for everyday jobs without heavy data manipulation.

Basic - best for:

  • Smaller contractors and installers who need professional labels for routine work.
  • Teams who mainly print straightforward cable and equipment labels from tidy spreadsheets.
  • Users who value ease of use and a low overall cost over advanced data tools.

With Basic, your Fox-in-a-Box® can:

  • Edit and print 200+ Silver Fox® label types for cables, panels and assets.
  • Copy and paste data straight from spreadsheets into the software.
  • Auto-detect the USB port so you can plug in and print quickly.
  • Use “size to fit” so text automatically fits each label.
  • Swap between different label types without stress.
  • Update project numbers and labels remotely and watch built-in help videos.

If most of your work is small to medium jobs with straightforward print runs, Basic typically covers everything you need from a cable label maker and label cable printer at the lowest overall cost.

4. Advanced level

Advanced - more data, more control

Advanced is the most popular choice. It is designed for medium-size contractors, panel builders and integrators who work heavily from spreadsheets, test results and patch panels.

Advanced - best for data-driven workflows

  • Jobs where “everything starts in a spreadsheet”.
  • Projects that depend on test results, sequences and patch panel layouts.
  • Teams that want the Patch Panel Module and automation without going all the way to Professional.

Advanced includes everything in Basic, plus:

  • Integration with Fluke LinkWare Live, AEM and Softing test systems.
  • Import of single columns or merged columns directly from CSV or spreadsheets.
  • Multi-line labels for denser information and control over exact font sizes.
  • Printing two rolls at once - for example, heatshrink on one, non-shrink on the other.
  • Roll-back function to avoid wasting labels when you overshoot a job.
  • Ability to build multiple versions of a job in one go and add prefixes, suffixes and symbols automatically.
  • Patch Panel Module for fast, consistent patch panel labeling.

If your workflow is spreadsheet-heavy and you want cable labeling software that works with your data, Advanced turns Fox-in-a-Box® into a powerful platform rather than just a printer.

5. Professional level

Professional - built for big projects and asset management

Professional is designed for large projects, data centers and asset managers who need full control of data, graphics and sharing. It includes everything in Advanced, then adds the kind of capability you would expect from high-end asset label software.

Professional - best for:

  • Teams managing thousands of IDs across multiple sites or data halls.
  • Organizations that use barcodes, QR codes® and graphics as standard.
  • Multi-user environments where jobs must be shared, locked and exported between locations.
  • Frameworks and long-term projects where traceability and asset records are critical.

Professional adds capabilities such as:

  • Full spreadsheet-style view and import within the software.
  • Selection of specific cells, not just whole columns, for fine-grained control.
  • Production of cross ferrules and variable quantity duplication for cable IDs.
  • Barcodes and QR codes® on labels for tracking and asset management.
  • Import of graphics and logos for branded electrical cable labels.
  • Professional “satellite” features for advanced workflows and job sharing.
  • Export of locked jobs to other users, plus the ability to add new streams into an existing sequence mid-job.
  • Rotation of graphics directly inside the software and ongoing Professional-level feature additions.

If you treat Fox-in-a-Box® as central label printer equipment for complex, long-term frameworks, Professional is the natural choice.

6. Try & upgrade

Try higher levels free, on your schedule

Every Fox-in-a-Box® system includes free trial time on the higher software levels, so you can test real projects before deciding whether to upgrade.

How the free trials work

  • Buy Basic and you can try Advanced and Professional for three days each.
  • Buy Advanced and you can try Professional for three days.
  • Those are three separate days of use per level, not three calendar days in a row.

You might use one trial day on a big project this week, the second a month later and save the third for a future tender or framework job. You choose when to activate each day.

Upgrades only go up - you cannot downgrade again. The usual pattern is to start with the level that matches how you work today, use your trial days on real jobs at the next level up, then upgrade when the extra features will clearly save time or money.

7. Decision guide

How to decide which level is for you

There is no single “right” answer - just the level that fits how you work today and where your projects are heading. These rules of thumb can help.

Choose Basic if

You are a smaller contractor or installer, mainly print straightforward cable and equipment labels from simple spreadsheets, and want a solid cable label printer and electrical cable label maker with full online training and support but minimal complexity.

Choose Advanced if

You regularly work from test results and structured spreadsheets, would benefit from Fluke LinkWare Live, AEM or Softing integration, want to print two rolls at once and need the Patch Panel Module for control panels, data rooms and industrial sites.

Choose Professional if

You are managing large projects, sites or data centers, rely on barcodes, QR codes®, graphics and cross ferrules, need multiple users to share and lock jobs between locations and want Fox-in-a-Box® to act as central label printer equipment for complex, long-term frameworks.

These are not rigid boxes, just patterns based on how people use the system today. Choose the level you know you will use now, make full use of your free trial days on higher levels, and you can always step up as your projects grow.
